An IUD is a T-shaped piece of plastic about the size of a quarter that is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Two types are available - one is covered with copper and the other releases the hormone progestin.

Cost: price may vary vary anywhere from $0-1,300 (varies on insurance, income, etc.)
Pros:
No need for pill/ strict schedule
No estrogen-related side effects.
Can be used while breast-feeding.
Replacement only required after 7 years
Cons:
No protection from STI’s
Increased possibility of cramps
May be expelled
Note: Hormonal IUD’s do not contain estrogen.
